Liskow & Lewis Welcomes Cherrell Simms Taplin

Liskow & Lewis is pleased to welcome Cherrell Simms Taplin to the firm. 

Cherrell is an energy litigator who has extensive experience representing clients in all facets of litigation.  She has worked as a partner in private practice, served as judge pro tempore in state court, and she served as the Senior Chief Deputy City Attorney for the City of New Orleans.

As a partner in private practice, Cherrell cultivated a diverse litigation practice, including commercial litigation, complex personal injury, and tort matters. She has litigated several cases through trial in both state and federal court. As the Senior Chief Deputy City Attorney for the City of New Orleans, Cherrell expanded her litigation practice to include contract, construction, land use, public bid, employment, administrative appeals, and civil rights matters. She also managed over 1000 open cases, including high-profile litigation, from inception to resolution, supervised the lawyers and staff, and oversaw the office budget.  In April 2017, the Louisiana Supreme Court saw fit to appoint Cherrell to serve as Judge Pro Tempore in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court, Division J. As a judge, she gained an inside perspective on the judicial process and presided over several trials and hearings.

Cherrell serves as an adjunct professor at Tulane University School of Law where she teaches Negotitation and Mediation Skills. She received her Juris Doctor from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 2002. She received the Loyola University College of Law Black Law Students Association Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009.

Liskow Lawyer Marilyn Maloney is President-Elect of American College of Real Estate Lawyers

Liskow & Lewis is pleased to announce Marilyn Maloney is President-Elect of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, the premier organization of U.S. real estate lawyers.

The college is a national association of approximately 1,000 distinguished real estate lawyers. Admission into the college is by invitation only after a rigorous screening process. The American College of Real Estate Lawyers’ distinguished members have been elected to fellowship for their outstanding legal ability, experience, and high standards of professional and ethical conduct in the practice of real estate law. Marilyn has been a member of the organization for nearly twenty years and has served on the Board of Governors as Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary. She has also served as Chair of various committees, including the Programs Committee, the Orientation and Integration Committee, and the Insurance Committee.

Marilyn is a Houston-based business lawyer helping clients with real estate needs along with various other important transactions, including commercial lending, energy deals, intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate trust. Marilyn is an in-demand real estate conference organizer and speaker, and she is continuously recognized for her work in this area. She is listed in Best Lawyers in America, and she is a Top-Rated Real Estate Attorney in Texas Super Lawyers. Marilyn is a member of Houston Commercial Real Estate Women (“CREW”), and she is a Fellow of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers.

Marilyn is a leader in many civic, legal, professional and religious associations. In 2013, she received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University, and, in 2004, she was recognized by the Louisiana Bar Foundation with its President’s Award. The same year, she was selected by New Orleans CityBusiness as one of the Women of the Year. Marilyn regularly provides seminars and lectures on a variety of subjects, including real estate, lending, oil and gas, commercial insurance, and intellectual property. She received her Juris Doctor from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Louisiana State University in 1975.

Liskow & Lewis is pleased to announce the election of three new shareholders, effective January 1, 2019.

Hunter Chauvin, Lafayette

Hunter is a litigator that assists major oil and gas companies in environmental litigation, with a concentration on legacy lawsuits and coastal land loss issues. He has worked with experts across the globe to defend environmental lawsuits, which has allowed him to develop a deep working knowledge of the complex scientific issues underpinning these cases. He has been entrusted to represent clients in major bellwether environmental cases. Hunter’s practice also includes working with regulators at the department of natural resources and other agencies on behalf of oil and gas companies to resolve regulatory disputes. Hunter teaches Trial Advocacy for LSU’s Paul M. Hebert law school and is a board member for the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel.  He is an active member of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI), Louisiana Oil and Gas Association (LOGA), and the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association (LMOGA). Hunter received his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Louisiana State University in 2011.

Ryan Christiansen, New Orleans

Ryan is a business lawyer helping companies in real estate matters. His practice is concentrated in the areas of commercial real estate, secured transactions, commercial and energy lending, ship mortgage and marine financing, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate and general business matters. In commercial real estate matters, Ryan advises clients with respect to the leasing, acquiring, selling, developing and financing of commercial real estate. He counsels them in the review and analysis of title and issuance of title insurance policies for the firm’s title agency. Ryan advises clients with corporate governance and has aided clients in the creation, acquisition, and sale of business entities and assets in a variety of industries, including real estate, construction, non-profit, and oil and gas. His clients consist of real estate developers, vessel companies, banks, and industry and pipeline companies. He is the Vice-Chair of the Title Insurance and Surveys of the American Bar Association Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section and he is a member of the New Orleans Bar Association’s Real Property Committee. Ryan received his Juris Doctor from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, magna cum laude, in 2011.

James Kittrell, Houston

James Kittrell is a litigator with a practice focusing on commercial, energy, and maritime matters.  James has represented his clients at both the trial court and the appellate level. His energy litigation experience involves representing oil and gas clients in venues across the state of Texas in a wide variety of lawsuits related to on-shore operations, including royalty claims and operational disputes. James’ commercial litigation practice includes a range of contractual matters, including indemnity claims, shipping disputes, and suits on sworn accounts. His maritime practice focuses on representing large marine services companies in Jones Act cases and other maritime personal injury lawsuits. James received his Juris Doctor from The University of Texas School of Law, with honors, in 2011.
