“In my practice, I have learned that communication is essential to all working relationships. My goal is to treat a client’s needs as my own by maintaining a strong line of communication, providing a clear common-sense litigation strategy, and being responsive to the individual practices of each client.”

Overview

Melanie Derefinko is a litigator in the firm’s New Orleans office, who focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation involving disputes between businesses. Melanie’s representative matters have included intellectual property disputes, contract disputes between businesses, labor and employment disputes, the enforceability of noncompete agreements, and collection matters.

She has extensive experience in drafting dispositive motions, Daubert motions, and both pre and post-trial briefs in federal court. Additionally, Melanie has experience with e-discovery and the crafting of ESI protocols tailored to the individual client’s need, including working with opposing counsel to formulate agreed upon search terms, narrowing the universe of documents to prove the client’s case, and selecting a vendor that is best suited for the case at hand.

Melanie also recently assisted co-counsel with exhibit preparation and usage during an eight-day intellectual property trial in federal court and a full day evidentiary trial on various exceptions in state court in Louisiana involving products liability and breach of warranty claims against a national manufacturer of industrial heaters who, following a battle of the forms, invoked a forum selection clause and various warranty exclusions.

Before joining Liskow, Melanie was a judicial intern for the Honorable J. Sterling Snowdy of the Fortieth Judicial District Court, and a judicial intern for the Honorable Fredericka Wicker of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
