This Week in Panama: Ray Waid To Present on Legal Issues Involved in the Recent U.S. Navy Collisions

Ray Waid is traveling to Panama this week to give a presentation on legal issues involved in the recent U.S. Navy collisions off the coasts of Japan and Singapore.  The USS FITZGERALD and USS MCCAIN collisions occurred within months of one another and resulted in 17 deaths and well over $500 million in property damage.  While the investigations are still underway, several senior Navy officers have been relieved of command.  The topic is of particular interest to Ray as a maritime lawyer who navigated a Japan-based, U.S. Navy destroyer for three years prior to attending law school at Tulane.

Ray's presentation is part of the Eighth Annual Oslo-Southampton-Tulane Colloquium.  The Colloquium is an annual event organized by the law schools of Oslo, Southampton and Tulane Universities, three of the leading centers for maritime law globally.  

Foss Maritime Joins FEMA’s Response Operations in Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands

On October 4 Foss Maritime announced it has contracted with FEMA to support relief efforts in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Foss is deploying accommodation vessels to serve as floating hotels, providing safe housing and warm meals for responders.

“We have the ability and the commitment to serve the wide range of needs of hurricane victims in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and are prepared to offer additional services, as needed, to FEMA and other federal agencies throughout all relief efforts,” said Will Roberts, Foss CCO.

“For Foss, this type of project is at the heart of what we do. We are glad to do our part to help the families affected by this devastating disaster by enlisting the skills of our finest operators and providing needed equipment,” he said.

Liskow Shareholder Dana M. Douglas Named to CityBusiness Women of the Year Class of 2017

Liskow is proud to congratulate Dana Douglas for her selection to New Orleans CityBusiness’ ‘Women of the Year’ 2017.

As a lawyer, Dana is committed to both her clients and her local legal community. “I really enjoy practicing with members of the local bar and before the esteemed members of the Bench.  It has always been very important to me to not only work in this community but to be engaged in it.  Service in the community—particularly as it relates to the needs of children—grounds me and helps me to keep a view of the city and the world beyond my peripheral vision.” Dana’s practice is focused on commercial, energy and intellectual property litigation in the state and federal courts of Louisiana and across a wide variety of industry sectors. Clients regularly turn to Dana when they’re facing high-exposure litigation.

When it comes to community involvement, Dana is passionate about reaching out to those in need, as well as inspiring other attorneys to become more service-minded. Dana’s service to the community has been formally recognized by many, including the Louisiana State Bar Association and the New Orleans Bar Association. In 2008, Dana was presented with the Louisiana State Bar Association’s President’s Award.  In 2016, Dana was also awarded the Camille Gavel Award, and in 2014, she received the Crystal Gavel Award. She was also a recipient of the 2017 Gillis Long Public Service Award from Loyola Law. All of these awards speak to the difference Dana makes in the community. She is also dedicated to diversity and inclusion in the practice of law, and cites the importance of diversity across all spectrums in the field. Within Liskow & Lewis, Dana serves on the Diversity Committee and is head of the Paralegal Committee.

Dana is dedicated to making the community a better place through serving in leadership roles. She is President-Elect of the New Orleans Bar Association, the Immediate Past President of the Greater New Orleans Louis A. Martinet Society, and the Founding Chapter President of the South Louisiana Women’s Energy Network. She is also the Chair of the 2017 Justice For All Ball with Honorary Chair Leah Chase which raises money for the Pro Bono Project. The Pro Bono Project serves those in need of civil legal services and access to justice.

Outside of her legal and community work, Dana finds a work/life balance by spending time with family and friends and through exercise. A native of New Orleans, Dana Douglas attended St. Mary’s Academy, an all-girls school in New Orleans East, and then studied social work as an undergraduate student at Miami University of Ohio, where she was President of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and she was a member of the International Undergraduate Committee (representing the Great Lakes Region). Dana received her Juris Doctor from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law in 2000, and has been a shareholder at Liskow & Lewis since 2008.

Started in 1999, Women of the Year recognizes 50 women from the area whose successes in business and contributions to the community have made them movers and shakers in the region. Honorees are innovative leaders who are making waves with their energy, ideas, achievements and commitment to excellence in the area.
