Liskow attorney Ray Waid was recently featured in Bloomberg Law’s article, “Trump’s Push for Nuclear Ships Waits as Industry Seeks Details,” which examines the regulatory challenges surrounding efforts to develop nuclear-powered merchant ships in the United States.
The article explores the roles of the U.S. Maritime Administration, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and U.S. Coast Guard in developing a regulatory framework for nuclear-powered vessels, as well as questions surrounding licensing, vessel safety, crew credentialing and the division of authority among federal agencies.
Ray, who leads Liskow’s Maritime Industry Group, discussed the current regulatory landscape, noting that the standards needed to support nuclear propulsion ships are not yet in place. He also addressed the challenges facing companies as they await further guidance on how nuclear-powered vessels will be regulated.
