Law Students

The firm’s recruitment goal is simple – to hire and retain lawyers who have demonstrated the potential for excellence. The firm regularly recruits top graduates from leading law schools in Louisiana, Texas and across the country, focusing on students who rank in the top percentile of their law school class. Liskow seeks to hire associates primarily from those who have participated in the firm’s Summer Associate Program. The program is designed to allow second-year law students the opportunity to learn first-hand about the practice of law and, more importantly, about the firm’s unique culture and dynamic law practice.

Overview

Summer associates are not typically assigned to a specific section of the firm and are encouraged to work with all practice groups throughout a five or six week clerkship. This flexibility not only promotes a better understanding of the firm and the firm’s lawyers; it also provides an opportunity for a summer associate to develop or hone a particular interest or work preference during their clerkship.

Although legal research and writing are the primary work activities of a summer associate, Liskow also encourages clerks to attend out-of-office activities, such as depositions, trials, hearings, inspections, and closings. In addition to day-to-day work projects, the firm hosts a variety of fun social functions to allow law students and lawyers to get to know each other in a less formal setting.

FAQs About Our Summer Program

Q. How do I become a summer associate?

A. Firm representatives conduct annual on-campus interviews at law schools in Louisiana and the firm accepts resumes from students at law schools throughout the country. If you are interested in employment but do not attend a law school that is visited by Liskow recruiters, please visit the apply page and submit a cover letter, resume, and transcript.

Q. What if I don’t have a particular interest in an area of the law?

A. Summer associates are usually not assigned to a particular practice, and are encouraged to complete projects for lawyers in several practice areas. Liskow’s goal is to introduce students to as many practice areas and lawyers as possible. Of course, if there is a particular area of interest, the firm makes every effort to gear the student’s projects towards that area.

Q. Do summer associates spend all summer performing legal research?

A. Liskow lawyers are effective in getting summer associates out from behind computers to observe the day-to-day practice of law. The firm encourages students to attend trials, depositions, closings, inspections, client meetings, and a variety of other out-of-the-office activities.

Q. Do summer associates spend the entire summer at Liskow?

A. It is the general practice for summer associates to split the summer between two firms or, perhaps, two cities. The typical commitment is five to six weeks or about one-half of the summer whether it be first-half or second-half.

Q. Do summer associates receive feedback on the projects they complete?

A. Lawyers are encouraged to share their feedback with the summer associates through a formal evaluation process. Feedback ranges from general comments about the work product to a detailed critique of the research, writing style, or other specific elements.

Q. Are summer associates assigned mentors?

A. Summer associates are paired with a lawyer mentor, usually an associate who has been with the firm for several years. The mentor’s responsibilities include helping the summer associate become acquainted with firm procedures, getting to know the summer associate, and assuring that the summer associate gets to meet a wide cross-section of the firm.

Q. What is the compensation for summer associates?

A. Summer associates are paid a competitive salary consistent with the market rates in the city where they work.

The firm's summer associate program allows us to get to know and work with top achievers from leading law schools, and, equally important, it provides summer associates ample time to experience our practice areas and evaluate our people and firm culture. When we hire people, we do so with the hope that they will spend their entire career at Liskow.
