When the stakes are high, you need an advocate who understands your business and knows the right people. As former legislators and regulators, we do all that (and more).

Overview

We were there, on the inside. Which is why we usually know how the laws turned out the way they did and how the government applies them. Now we sit on your side of the table. Because of our experience in the state legislature and government regulatory agencies, clients can expect us to be intimately familiar with the issues associated with the law and policy initiatives as well as the people who can help. Coupled with our wide scientific base and deep legal experience, our lobbyists have an unmatched understanding of the technical, legal and business challenges facing your company.

As lawyers for major players in the energy and environmental sectors, we are much more than a conduit between the company and the government: we zero in on the precise legal issue each client faces and we solve those problems, one legislative change at a time. Our considerable experience allows us to develop and implement a strategy, knowing in advance how to best position it to advance or safeguard the interests of our clients.

From methanol and petrochemical facilities to grain elevators and green-fuel programs, we step in before the project begins and lobby at the executive and legislative levels. With legacy projects, we are unafraid of the intense battles to mitigate liability. We also help you navigate legislative updates that address emerging industries such as carbon capture sequestration.

A targeted approach for specific aims

Our history in the public service sector enables us to foster and leverage relationships that are integral in identifying business solutions for our clients. We assess specific issues, addressing pitfalls in the law and regulations that may put your project at risk, and find legislative solutions that will help your project succeed. Sometimes that means managing the legislative process to change the law: we can draft and introduce a bill, and help it pass, or stop a bill that is an obstacle to our clients’ projects. We are adept at working with clients to narrow the focus on that critical, strategic issue that will directly influence the outcome of their project by advancing – or blocking – a policy or regulation.

Practical knowledge and collaboration that moves the needle

One of the most successful pillars of our firm is how effectively we build just-in-time teams. If we need the experience and insight of another lawyer, they add value from the get-go. Because of Liskow’s rich history in energy and natural resources, they already have an acute understanding of the legal issues involved. Our lobbying practice is fully integrated into the firm, which means that we can keep your project moving — from inception to execution and beyond.

A relevant and meaningful commitment to service

Shaping Louisiana mineral, energy, environmental and conservation laws has been in our firm DNA since the earliest days. This, plus our scientific backgrounds in geology, provide a unique backdrop for our lawyers who have served as: the State Representative for the 98th District of Louisiana, (including Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Chairman of the House Civil Law and Procedure Committee, member of the State Bond Commission, and member of the State Board of Commerce & Industry), and the Assistant Secretary and General Counsel to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, the Assistant Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, and the Secretary of the State Mineral and Energy Board.

We are known for these strengths

  • We help energy, chemical, petrochemical, industrial, manufacturing, and product clients throughout the Gulf Coast with developing, acquiring and divesting chemical manufacturing facilities, refineries and other high-profile energy-related facilities.
  • We represent global, regional and local companies in difficult cases involving toxic torts, class-action litigation, insurance coverage and defense litigation, maritime personal injury and product liability cases.
  • Chemical manufacturers facing high-stakes class action cases and developers facing product liability cases turn to us for our extensive experience in these areas.
  • Energy companies regularly hire us to handle legacy lawsuits. In these oilfield restoration cases, we represent upstream, midstream and downstream clients in hearings before the Office of Conservation.
  • We represent clients before the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, and the State Mineral and Energy Board.
  • We counsel trade associations for environmental and energy law and policy, such as regulations governing hydraulic fracturing.
Neil Abramson, in particular, of Liskow & Lewis did an outstanding job representing us, with excellent local expertise in the law, courts, judiciary, and legal landscape.
