Overview

Jill Willhoft has built a successful legal career across the Gulf Coast supporting maritime companies and, by association, numerous other businesses. Her knowledge of the industry and broad range of legal skills gives her an edge as a trusted adviser who not only stays ahead of potential problems but also quickly resolves those that materialize. Her practice has focused for many years on maritime personal injury and other admiralty-related issues, including cargo matters, environmental spills and cleanup. She has defended countless creditors in bankruptcy matters across the Gulf Coast and elsewhere and has handled asbestos and other mass tort matters, gaining the experience required to manage class actions and other types of cases that produce a high volume of documents.

A natural outgrowth of her role as general counsel for numerous companies and corporations, Jill is a powerful asset on the transactional side, tracing the full cycle of a business from formation to dissolution. She partners with banks and insurers to see that her clients’ interests are represented and that deals go smoothly and as intended.

Before joining Liskow & Lewis, Jill practiced for more than 17 years at maritime defense litigation firms in New Orleans and opened the Louisiana office of an international law firm. Early in her career, she served as in-house counsel to a major foodservice franchisor, handling franchisee compliance, risk management assessment, international and domestic trademarks and contracts, as well as the legal aspects of day-to-day operations.

Jill received her B.A. from the University of New Orleans and her law degree from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center. She is licensed to practice in Louisiana and Texas.

Her practice is predominately litigation based with a focus on maritime, personal injury defense, collections, bankruptcy, commercial litigation, and employment matters. Jill also serves clients with non-bankruptcy, insolvency-related matters, general litigation, contract disputes, succession matters, personal injury, property disputes, employment and labor issues, and commercial enforcement actions, including collections, foreclosures, note and guaranty actions, vessel sales, lien/asset search assessments, vessel seizures, asset seizures and foreclosures, property dispute cases, car accident cases, Jones Act cases, lien placement and forfeiture matters.

Jill’s philosophy on responsiveness mirrors Liskow and Lewis’s 24/7 response program, which helps ensure that team members are engaged during the first critical hours following a catastrophe and remains active in all of her cases from start to finish.
