“I was fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in Liskow’s Summer Associate Program, during which time I was able to get a glimpse of the congenial atmosphere we have here at the firm. Through the program, I gained invaluable real world experience and was even able to attend a deposition. Five years later, I’m thankful for what I gained from the program and that it led me to the place where I am building my career.”
- Jillian Marullo, Associate
Liskow & Lewis’ summer associate program serves as the primary source for hiring entry-level lawyers. The program is designed to allow second-year law students the opportunity to learn first-hand about the practice of law and, more importantly, about our unique culture and dynamic law practice.
Summer associates are not typically assigned to a specific section of the firm. Rather, we encourage law students to work with several different practice groups over the course of their clerkship. This flexibility not only promotes a better understanding of the firm and our lawyers; it also provides an opportunity for a summer associate to develop or hone a particular interest or work preference during his or her clerkship. Each summer associate is assigned a lawyer mentor who acts as a guide through the clerkship experience and as an additional resource to assist the summer associate in making an informed career decision.
Although legal research and writing are the primary work activities of a summer associate, we also encourage clerks to attend out-of-office activities, such as depositions, trials, hearings, inspections and closings. In addition to day-to-day work projects, the firm hosts a variety of fun social functions to allow law students and lawyers to get to know each another in a less formal setting.
“Liskow cares about developing its talent and fostering a positive work environment for its new lawyers. Shareholders take the time to explain how a particular project plays into an overall case strategy which allows an associate to both master the skills they brought to the firm (like researching and writing), and to learn more about the practice of law.”
- RJ Marse, Associate
Liskow & Lewis is very selective in its hiring decisions, and we provide a complete environment for a talented new lawyer to build a career. With this in mind, associate training and development is a top priority.
Regularly scheduled formal in-house programs as well as day-to-day interaction with senior lawyers and clients help associates reach their professional potential. Associates are encouraged to participate in bar association activities, educational seminars and professional groups outside the firm.
New associates are assigned to a particular practice group, although an associate may work with lawyers outside of that section if a particular need or interest arises. Within any given practice area, a new associate during his or her first few years will work for several different shareholders to obtain a good overview of the firm’s practice.
This approach allows the associate’s capabilities to be evaluated and guided by a variety of experienced practitioners. Associates are assigned a partner-mentor and are evaluated on a formal basis every six months throughout the partnership track.
Our first-year compensation package for associates is at or near the top of the scale for major firms. In addition, the firm pays bar review and bar examination expenses.
Associates are normally considered for advancement to shareholder status after serving as associates for seven years. The firm gives credit toward shareholder status to associates who have completed judicial clerkships. Click here for frequently asked questions concerning the summer associate program.
